Sustainable Castor Association
Supply Chain Standard

To ensure the credibility of castor oil sustainability claims, all Sustainable Castor Association members that take legal ownership and produce or handle certified sustainable oil products need to be certified against SuCCESS Supply Chain Code. SuCCESS Code for the supply chain is presented by a set of requirements to be used by organizations in the supply chain of castor to demonstrate implemented systems for control of certified castor which is verified by a third-party audit & certification. Processors or users of certified sustainable castor products can claim certified castor products, once they successfully go through an audit and receive a certificate of Supply Chain Certification Standard. All the control points (CPs) in SuCCESS Supply Chain Code are Mandatory Control Points.

Mass Balance

Mass Balance (MB) is a Supply chain model that allows certified claims to be transferred from one castor product to another either through physical blending or administratively throughout the entire supply chain.

In the mass balance model the quantity of certified products entering the operation is controlled and an equivalent quantity of products leaving the operations can be sold as certified. The physical mixing of certified and non-certified products is allowed (however it is not a requirement) at any stage in the supply chain after the farm gate; provided that the quantities are controlled in the documentation.

Even where physical mixing does not occur, the ‘certified’ claim may be disassociated from the physical certified product and the ‘certified’ claim can be allocated to any physical product leaving the system as long as the volume or weight are appropriately balanced.

Hybrid Model

This model (Hybrid) is a combination of using the SuCCESS® claim (equivalent to the quantity of SuCCESS® certified castor beans) up to the mill level and, after that, associating this SuCCESS® claim to physical castor oil & derivatives in the rest of the supply chain with a SuCCESS® mass balance supply chain approach.

Part 1- Once certified against the SuCCESS® code for farming, the castor beans producer (farmer/farmer group) is granted a SuCCESS® claim equivalent to the volume of certified castor production by the Sustainable Castor Association based on the certificate issued by the certification body. The SuCCESS® claim is allocated to the mills by the Sustainable Castor Association on the directives of the organisation sponsoring sustainable castor farming projects.

Part 2- Mills sell the equivalent quantity of castor oil to the sponsors with the associated SuCCESS® claim, and a SuCCESS® mass balance supply chain approach follows throughout the supply chain after that.
